DIRECTOR / PRINCIPAL

Jasmine Stewart-Yates

I started dancing at the age of 10 at a small dance school in Mandurah called ‘Jenny Lynn Dance’. Soon after, I saw a performance group called Pulse Performance Company where they were dancing one minute and fire twirling the next and that’s when I knew that performing was for me. I joined Pulse Performance Company at the age of 13 and I performed in many different shows (Elementals 2008, Dream Weaver 2010 & Harmonike 2012) and street performances (Crab Fest, Stretch Fest and Little Nippers). Not only did I do dancing with Pulse but learnt the basics in Acrobatics, Trapeze, Silks, Diablo, Juggling and Cube Spinning. My personal specialty at Pulse (and continues now) is Fire Twirling with POI and the Staff. The Dance Teacher/Choreographer at Pulse Performance Company was Sharon Lee Michau who became my dance and performance mentor.

Sharon opened up her own dance school ‘XS Dance’ where I attended to learn all about dance.

I went to Mandurah High School from years 8 – 10 where they didn’t have a dance class but the Head of Drama wanted a dance to put in to Yoh Fest when I was in year 10, and I was the only person in the school with enough experience with dance to be able to make a show. I put the word out that I needed dancers and luckily I had a group of 7 that I got together with every lunch to make this dance. My efforts towards Yoh Fest got me the Cultural Arts award when I graduated year 10 in 2009.

In 2010 I attended Mandurah Senior Campus where I was able to Dance as one of my subjects. Dance teacher Marcus Reid showed me in depth over 2 years about the art of Contemporary Dance. At the Campus I performed in Yoh Fest 2010 & 2011, Country Week 2010 & 2011 and School Productions ‘Grynch with a Y with Christmas in July 2010 & Bad Romance 2011, where I choreographed and was Dance Captain. I left Mandurah Senior Collage with Cert I in Creative Industries – Dance and achieved the medal for top student in Dance.

After leaving school I decided I wanted to keep learning about dance so I auditioned for the Principal Academy of Dance where I studied dance full time (6 days a week) to get my Cert IV in Performing Arts Majoring in Dance in 2012.  In this year I learnt Show Girl, Pass De Deux, Ballet and Modern. During this year I had my first taste of dance teaching by running my own all day Hip Hop Dance Work Shop, this opened me up to another side of dance I didn’t know about, teaching.

Due to injury I had to give up at becoming a professional dancer but in 2014 I found another way of making dance my career through teaching.

I started teaching in 2014 and have taught at 3 different dance school since then and now I am on my own amazing journey with Fierce Dance!

Head over to the about section to find out more about Fierce Dance.
